I am pleased to invite you to attend the MiNDS Colloquium  Thursday January 17th at 3:00 in MDCL 3020. Bring your coffee cup for coffee and cookies before the talk at 2:45.

Dr. Ana Andreazza is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Toronto and Independent Scientist at Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.

Dr Andreazza received her B.Sc. degree in Biotchnology from University of Caxias do Sul in Brazil and her MSc and PhD in Biochemistry from The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. She completed Postdoctoral fellowships in the Departments of Biochemistry in Brazil and The Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia.

Ana's research interests include the role of biochemical pathways in the pathophysiology of mood disorders, particularly those involving oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Specifically, she is interested in exploring the possible connections between molecular mechanisms that lead to synaptic alterations and which of those may be potential avenues for therapy. Dr. Andreazza has published several research articles in peer reviewed journals and has presented her work at several national and international scientific conferences.

Her talk will discuss the crosstalk between the brain and periphery findings of oxidative stress in major psychosis. Recent results from her group showed that markers of early lipid peroxidation (lipid hydroperoxides) have a negative relationship with white matter damage, evaluated by diffusion tension analysis, which might offer a biomarker of crosstalk between white matter abnormalities and peripheral measurement of oxidative stress.
